ISO 20022 and crypto: messaging is not endorsement
How to separate a financial messaging standard, a settlement network and a token’s economic utility.
What ISO 20022 standardises
ISO 20022 provides a framework for modelling and exchanging financial information. It organises concepts and messages used by banks and payment infrastructures. It does not set a cryptocurrency’s price, guarantee its safety or make a token a central-bank reserve asset. A reference to the standard should identify the message, product or integration involved rather than simply present a list of tickers.
Message, settlement and token: three different layers
A payment message carries instructions and data; settlement changes balances or rights. The system carrying the message may differ from the system settling money. A company can also offer payment software without every transaction requiring its associated token. An announced integration therefore does not, by itself, establish mandatory asset demand or an increase in the token’s value.
How to check a banking partnership
Look for dated confirmation from both parties and distinguish a pilot from commercial operation. Check jurisdiction, scope, settlement asset and usage conditions. A screenshot of a logo, a patent or membership in a working group does not establish that a bank uses a coin for transfers. If the documents do not establish it, the appropriate conclusion is that the claim remains unproven.
What to examine before valuing an asset
Review issuance, unlocks, supply distribution, fees captured by the token and tradable liquidity. A network’s message volume is not the same as token-buying volume. Unit-price comparisons also do not establish whether a coin is cheap: different circulating supplies produce very different market capitalisations. This guide does not maintain a list of certified coins or predict automatic winners from a banking migration.
Before making a decision
- Is the source the bank or only the token issuer/promoter?
- Is it in production, in a pilot or announced without a date?
- Is token usage established, and how does it capture value?
